About Us

The Hence High Impact Weather (HIWx) Group generally asks two big questions:

  1. How do the behaviors of cloud systems evolve in their larger-scale environments, and how do those changes impact their resulting precipitation and potential hazards?
  2. How does the behavior and evolution of these systems manifest in impacts on human systems?

We specialize in examining hazardous cloud systems, ranging in size from hailstorms to hurricanes, using a wide variety of tools: field campaign observations, high-altitude and satellite remote sensing, and computer simulations. Currently, our projects are funded by the National Science Foundation, NASA, and the Department of Energy.
